My Philosophy of Care

Pregnancy is an important part of life’s journey when one has made a commitment to bringing a child into existence. Pregnancy is not an illness, but women’s bodies do undergo tremendous physiological changes during pregnancy. Most women are in good health and their bodies have no trouble adapting to pregnancy.

Some women are unfortunate in that their bodies do not adapt properly and for them, pregnancy can jeopardize their health and put them and their unborn baby at risk. Yet other women may have pre-existing medical conditions and pregnancy may exacerbate their illness and if untreated, may lead to complications.

My role as an Obstetrician is to identify for each of my patients what risks or challenges they may face during their pregnancies. I have a collaborative approach to care in pregnancy – by providing up to date evidencebased information on specific conditions and treatment, I allow my patients to make an informed choice about their options. Pregnancy, and childbirth in particular, is never risk-free and circumstances and outcomes can sometimes be bad.

As an experienced Obstetrician, I aim to minimize risk and the chances of a bad outcome, whilst at the same time allowing women’s pregnancies to be as natural and normal as possible for them, in accordance with their wishes.

For the vast majority of women in Australia, pregnancy results in a healthy baby and a healthy mother. If you have any health concerns or have experienced a bad outcome in the past and are still considering the possibility of pregnancy, I am happy to see you even before you get pregnant and work through any specific concerns you have.
